Washington, DC has been awarded $150,000+ in grant funds from the US EPA to help tackle the climate crisis through food waste diversion to anaerobic digestion. Over the coming years, the DC Office of Waste Diversion will use these funds to establish a training and certification program for commercial food waste generators that will equip the participants to set up successful source-separated organics programs to divert food waste to anaerobic digesters for processing. The innovative new program will train and certify businesses as “Food Waste Ready” using innovative new tools and strategies. This program will not only inspire restaurants, chefs, and other large generators of food waste to learn how to divert all food waste away from landfills, but the program will also directly support the growing anaerobic digestion infrastructure in the Metropolitan Washington Area.
