The New London County Farm Bureau is spearheading a renewable energy campaign to convince the state of Connecticut to look at on-farm anaerobic digesters as a way to convert food waste into energy, as well as other benefits for the state’s farmers and the environment.
Farm Bureau member Kevin Blacker said the state has a costly problem on its hands – thousands of tons of food waste are generated every year in Connecticut, and it’s not being put to good use.
“The incinerator in Hartford was shut down,” Blacker said. “Disposing of garbage is going to become very expensive. But removing food waste is a way to reduce that cost. And that food waste can then be sent to these on-farm anaerobic digesters where it provides a host of benefits to farms.” More .>>
