I have thoroughly enjoyed serving on the ABC Board over the past two years.  If re-elected I will continue to advocate for biogas, diversification of markets, and the important part biogas can play in our overall decarbonization efforts.  The next two years will be critical to the continued success of the industry as more biogas projects are implemented, carbon markets expand, and as more players enter the space.  My goal is to be an unbiased source of information for ABC members on all things biogas, development and implementation of biogas projects, compliance in regulated and voluntary markets, and an overall ambassador for biogas.  It would be an honor to be re-elected to the ABC Board for another two years.

Bryan Sievers

Vice Chair

Horizon II and Sievers Family Farm

View Bryan's Bio

Bryan operates a grain and livestock farm which includes 2,000 acres of tillable land and a 2,400 head beef cattle feedlot in Scott County, near Stockton, Iowa.  Bryan and his wife, Lisa, are enthusiastic environmental stewards of the land that’s been in the family for over 100 years.  They have been actively involved in implementing numerous conservation practices on their farm and in 2013 commissioned their 1.0 MW combined heat and power (CHP) anaerobic digester system. The anaerobic digesters process all of the beef cattle manure from their feedlot plus additional sources of food waste, biomass, and winter biogas crops.  They return all of the rich, pathogen-free, soil amendments produced by their digesters to their farmland in the form of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, and organic matter.  In 2014, AgriReNew received the Agricultural Biogas Project of the Year Award from the American Biogas Council and received the 2014 Iowa Environmental Excellence Award for their anaerobic digester project.

Recently, Bryan and Lisa partnered with Roeslein Alternative Energy (RAE) to form a new company called Horizon II.  This new company will produce renewable natural gas, from state-of-the art technology, that will be injected into a pipeline for use as a liquid transportation fuel.  Bryan has been serving as the Operations Manager for Horizon II since January 1, 2022.

In October 2022, RAE, Sievers Family Farms, and 14 additional partners were awarded an $80 million grant from the USDA’s Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities grant program.  Bryan will be serving as Chief Executive Officer for this innovative five-year program.  Here is a link to the USDA web site that describes the grant titled Horizon II: A Climate-Smart Future for Corn, Soybean, Livestock, and Renewable Natural Gas Production, in more detail: https://www.usda.gov/climate-solutions/climate-smart-commodities/projects.

In November 2022, Bryan participated in several panel discussions at COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.  The topics he covered during the panel discussions focused on the decarbonization of agricultural production practices in the circular agricultural economy which center around the anaerobic digestion of animal wastes, biomass, and food wastes.

Bryan received his degree in Agricultural Business in 1982 from Iowa State University. His past experiences include being a 3-year letterman on the Iowa State University baseball team, leadership roles in the Iowa Farm Bureau, a graduate of Leadership Iowa, serving two terms in the Iowa Legislature (one term in the Iowa House and one term in the Iowa Senate) and served as Chair of the Iowa Economic Development Authority’s Biomass Conversion committee.  He currently serves as Vice-Chair on the American Biogas Council Board of Directors.  Bryan also served on Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds’ Carbon Sequestration Task Force and also serves as Co-Chair of the Iowa Smart Agriculture initiative.  Bryan and Lisa have two children and six grandchildren.

View Bryan's Statement

The past two years have seen a whirlwind of growth and opportunities develop in the biogas arena.  As a member of the Board, I will continue to focus on developing the board and government policies and programs that will help sustain the unprecedented growth of our industry.  In addition, I will continue to focus on the many areas where anaerobic digestion can help contribute to the decarbonization of our economy such as agriculture, food waste, and facilitating the growth of landfill gas projects.  The passage of the Inflation Reduction Act and the recent proposals announced by the EPA to move forward with eRINS and address the D3 and D5 RINS issues with co-digestion represent tremendous opportunities that we need to focus on in 2023 and beyond.  If re-elected to the Board, I will commit the passion I have for this industry to ensuring the Board of Directors focuses on helping all of our ABC members grow, learn, and prosper.

Thank you in advance for considering me in becoming a board member for the American Biogas Council (ABC).  If elected to the ABC Board, I will commit my support and fulfill the obligations of the bylaws set forth by the ABC. I will support the biogas industry from an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) perspective as it relates to the use of biogas to energy (electricity, renewable natural gas, hydrogen, etc) and to work with legislators, government officials, and other stakeholders to support the industry.  It is our duty as industry leaders to improve the capital expenditures and the overall operating expenses of any and all biogas to energy projects.  By doing so, we can minimize the life-cycle costs and eliminate funding from outside agencies and grants.  Moreover, I am a member of the Leadership Advisory Board for the Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas, sitting on the Education sub-committee.  The primary focus is to study impacts with actual methane leakage performance from volunteer RNG projects.  Since that group only focuses on biogas to RNG, it would be beneficial to enlist ABC member volunteer projects to conduct this same demonstration for the entire biogas industry that our installations are low to no leakage of biogas after the meter.  Lastly, in addition to bringing my 27-years of expertise to the table, PCL also has hundreds of other technical professionals across North America (Canada and USA) as well as Australia that we can tap into as a resourced for our organization.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my service to the ABC Board of Directors these last several years and gladly offer my services for another term . I believe I have served the Board well in two key areas of importance to ABC. First, as a small trade organization, with limited staffing, ABC is only able to cut as large a swath of influence as it has, due to the hard work of its members and in particular its Board of Directors. Thanks to the understanding of my employer, I have been allowed to not just attend meetings and serve as a voting Board Member, but to spend considerable time serving as co-chair on committees and assist in many initiatives that require considerable hours of donated time. Second, across the course of a year, numerous topics arise requiring immediate ABC response to policy/technical issues. When those issues arise, I have formed a nice partnership with the ABC staff, providing technical review/expertise and writing whenever necessary. While other Board Members fill important gaps in financing, business, legal acumen, to name a few, my academic and engineering training affords a much-needed attribute to the Board. That, along with a willingness and ability to devote time and effort outside of my main job, makes me a valuable member of the ABC team. I look forward to supporting ABC and this industry in any capacity I can.

Thank you for considering me for the ABC Board of Directors.

As I illustrated in my Waste to Riches blog last year, I am passionate about the tremendous opportunities in leveraging waste to achieve universal energy access and decarbonization. I will bring this passion along with my expertise in business and project development, structured finance and policy to the ABC. Two specific examples of where I can help:

  1. With the arrival of the IRA and eRINs, it is pivotal to ensure that these measures result in significant and well earned growth of the biogas industry. Having launched the first landfill and dairy biogas to electricity projects using fuel cells, I will bring valuable insights to the eRIN committee as it participates in the EPA rulemaking process over the next year.
  1. I am excited to bring my deal structuring and capital raising experience to the Biogas Business School and help the ABC continue to impart cutting edge ideas and tools to its members.

It would be a privilege to serve you and contribute to the growth of the biogas industry.

She has been a member of the American Biogas Council (ABC) through her various employment positions since 2013. She has served one term on the Board of Directors and is currently an instructor of the ABC Digester Operator School.

View Jessica's Statement

If elected to the Board of Directors, I plan is to continue to help develop the ABC Digester Operator School by improving current modules or developing new ones based on student feedback.

I see an increasing shift towards adding food waste, high-strength industrial wastewater and FOG to digesters without a mechanism for understanding the impacts on the digester. My goal is to help foster this understanding through community discussions, webinars or in-person training so that the industry can become more profitable through increased tipping fees and biogas production.

I would also like to be involved in the Policy Committee to bring additional focus to industrial and high-strength wastewater digesters. Current policy puts non-traditional digesters at a significant disadvantage but offers a large growth area for the biogas industry.

In addition, I would also like to become more involved with the Digestate Committee so that the community can realize more value from the digestate that it produces. With current event highlighting the need for domestically produced, renewable fertilizers, I believe this is another large growth opportunity for the community.
