A rate hike for natural gas proposed by ABC member Vermont Gas Systems (VGS) would raise an average household monthly bill by about $2.40, the utility announced this week. In addition to natural gas (mostly methane) extracted from underground deposits, the utility is increasingly adding “renewable natural gas” into its pipelines from manure on farms and municipal food waste. One such digester and refinery is currently under construction in Addison County by another ABC member Vanguard Renewables. In its pivot from fossil fuels, VGS says it has targeted a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, and a full elimination by 2050. More>>
