As the American dairy industry continues to take steps toward a sustainable future, biogas developers are utilizing DVO anaerobic digester technology more than ever. In 2023 alone, the following 15 “Two-Stage Linear Vortex™” digester projects were initiated and/or completed on dairies across the country. These sites have a combined design capacity to produce over 2.6 million MMBtus of RNG per year.

What does this ultimately mean for biogas developers, their dairies, and the surrounding communities? Developers appreciate that DVO systems outperform older designs such as “round tank” CSTRs by over 30%, and covered lagoons by even more. This means more revenues earned “per cow.” They are also simpler to operate and easier to maintain.
Farmers love that DVO provides them with an excellent, clean bedding for their cattle that rivals sand, and without the added costs and damage to infrastructure that sand brings. Pathogens and odors are destroyed, as are weed seeds, which results in reduced herbicide usage.
Communities understand that modern digesters help make farmers even better environmental stewards of the land. Nutrients for crops can be more economically condensed and transported to where they’re really needed, preserving vital waterways. These nutrients can now be spread on growing crops, reducing runoff potential and increasing crop yield. Greenhouse gasses such as methane are captured and converted into renewable energy in the form of electricity, compressed natural gas (RNG), and diesel fuel substitutes.
Combined, these dairies will eventually produce 2.6 million MMBtus of RNG per year, which in turn can displace 21 million gallons of gasoline. Renewable gallons of fuel benefit us all!
Finally, with a projected lifespan of more than 30 years, DVO digesters will benefit generations to come.
