This study, motivated by the District of Columbia’s 80% solid waste diversion goal, looks at the volume of organic material available in DC proper, the role DC Water’s Blue Plains Wastewater Treatment Facility can play, and the need for a comprehensive Organics Site Management Plan. An evaluation of waste generated by the Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional (ICI) sector during this study determined that 85,195 tons of ICI food waste are generated per year in the District.
