August - How America's Biogas is Used - Data & Resources

Biogas turns organic waste from farms, landfills, wastewater treatment facilities, and food processing into renewable electricity, heat, and renewable natural gas (RNG). 497 new biogas systems have come online since 2020, and 89% of them produce RNG — driven by clean fuel programs for transportation. In total, U.S. systems capture nearly 788 billion cubic feet of biogas annually.

Landfills are the largest source of captured biogas in the U.S., driving record investment in renewable natural gas (RNG) production. The nation's 598 landfill gas capture systems provide about three-quarters of all biogas captured in the U.S. and produce 64% of the nation's RNG.
