Sysadvance North American has been selected to supply a biogas upgrading solution for the University Area Joint Authority Biosolids Facility Upgrade project. The Methagen AD 900F system was vetted by Rettew Associates within the Project Specification because of its capability to treat biogas from a wastewater treatment plant anaerobic digester with guarantees around meeting pipeline purity and purification efficiency. The Methagen AD is just a part of an overall plant upgrade with a total project value of $81 million.
Quandel Construction Group will hold the contract for the general construction portion of the project.
“The upgrades will allow the Authority to reduce operational costs from the current composting process, while generating new revenue for the Authority through regionalization and sale of the renewable energy”, said Jason Wert, Market Leader for Water and Renewable Energy at Rettew Associates. “It will be one of the largest RNG producers in Pennsylvania and is anticipated to sent over 100 million cubic feet of RNG to the regional pipeline each year, equivalent to 1,400 homes worth of natural gas.” said Wert.
“We are proud to see projects like this get to the execution phase. Starting in early 2023, we began working with Rettew as they vetted us against others and consequentially included us in the bid specification when it was published. For State College, PA; this project will be helping to decarbonize the area by reducing greenhouse gases being emitted into the atmosphere. At the projected flow of biogas generated, the project will offset the equivalent amount of carbon emitted from a fleet of 18,000 cars or expressed another way, the CO2 emissions from nearly 11 million gallons of gasoline.” Brent Jaklin – SYSADVANCE North America’s CEO.
About UAJA –
The University Area Joint Authority’s Spring Creek Pollution Control Facility provides wastewater treatment, solids handling, and reuse water to the Centre Region and comprises an advanced wastewater treatment facility with tertiary effluent standards and advanced water reclamation. The facility is currently rated for 10.56 mgd hydraulically (MMAF) and 50,000 pounds/day of biochemical oxygen demand.
The Biosolids Processing Facility upgrade will replace the compost facilities that are reaching the end of their useful life while establishing room for expanded volume. Overall, the Authority evaluated alternative gas upgrading systems as well as Class A Biosolids Technologies and Anerobic Digestion processes to convert the UAJA sludge to renewable energy (RNG) and dried biosolids.
