SACRAMENTO, CA—A coalition of clean fuels producers and advocates today launched a statewide media campaign in support of California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS), a nation-leading strategy administered by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to fight climate change by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

“The LCFS is working,” said Sam Wade, Director of Regulatory Affairs at the Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas. “Thanks to California’s forward thinking and investment, the state has displaced 25 billion gallons of petroleum with renewable fuels since the program’s inception. Our progress is remarkable, but California can only meet its 2030 climate goals with a strong, technology-neutral LCFS that continues to support clean fuels.”

California’s leadership and support of the LCFS has made the air cleaner. The state is exceeding its GHG reduction goals, breaking its dependence on foreign oil, and lowering costs through market competition. In 2022 alone, the LCFS reduced GHG emissions by 26 million metric tons – the equivalent of taking 5.8 million gas-powered cars off the road.

Added Wade, “CARB is considering changes to the LCFS that could impact its effectiveness, but we must continue with a strong program that supports an ‘all of the above’ clean fuels solution.”
The success of California’s LCFS has inspired other states to follow California’s lead. Oregon and Washington have in recent years adopted clean fuels standards and just last month New Mexico joined this vanguard of American climate leadership when it passed a clean fuels standard.

The media campaign, set to begin April 15, will showcase how California’s low carbon fuels standard is good for the environment, workers, public health and the economy.
