Greenwood County and Redtail Renewables Partner on Landfill Gas Project

Project will capture landfill methane and convert it into clean renewable natural gas

GREENWOOD, South Carolina — Greenwood County and Redtail Renewables today announced a long-term partnership to develop a renewable natural gas (RNG) project at the Greenwood County Landfill. The announcement follows Redtail Renewables’ acquisition of VRNG Greenwood LLC, the company developing the facility in a transaction that closed in late July.

Under long-term agreements with Greenwood County, Redtail will assume responsibility for investing in and operating the landfill’s gas collection system and will develop a facility to capture landfill methane — a potent greenhouse gas — and upgrade it into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas for use as a low-carbon transportation fuel.

“This partnership is an important investment in Greenwood County and the long-term stewardship of our landfill,” said Greenwood County Council Chairman Theo Lane. “By capturing landfill gas and putting it to productive use, we’re turning a resource that would otherwise be lost into an environmental benefit and lasting value for our community. We appreciate Redtail Renewables’ commitment to Greenwood County and look forward to seeing this project become a reality.”

The planned facility is designed to process 1,250 standard cubic feet of landfill gas per minute, producing 300,000 MMBtu of renewable natural gas per year once fully developed. That’s removing the CO2 emission of nearly 2,000 passenger cars from the road each year.

The Greenwood County landfill has an estimated 70-plus years of remaining operating life, providing a durable, long-term supply of landfill gas to support the project. Redtail intends to begin construction by the end of 2026 and to bring the facility into full renewable natural gas operations by the end of 2028.

The project recently received additional support through Greenwood County Council’s approval of modifications to the Landfill Gas Rights and Operations & Maintenance Agreements. The updated agreements strengthen the long-term partnership while providing benefits for both Greenwood County and Redtail Renewables.

The project deepens Redtail’s growing, multi-state portfolio of landfill-gas and renewable natural gas developments and reflects the company’s reputation as a trusted partner for landfill owners and host communities.
